Strange as it may sound, I think one reason why the DSCC isn't that thrilled with Marshall might be that she doesn't have a southern accent because she grew up in Maryland. Having a regional accent helps politicians relate to the people of an area, and even though (or maybe because) a lot of non-southerners have moved here in the last 30 or so years, many North Carolinians view people without southern accents as outsiders and would be less inclined to vote for them.

Burr will get re-elected. I am from NC and would like to see him lose but he is a better politician/campaigner than Dole, the element of surprise that Hagan had won`t work now and the general political environment for the Democrats is far different from 2008.

I too was surprised Marshall is not touted in the press or DSCC much. One reason I thought might be that she is a woman and NC already has one female Senator and a female Governor. Maybe they fear some backlash? Also Cunningham has a military background which won`t do him any harm here in NC. I don`t think Burr has a military background.

Unless their goal was a competative primary, I'm not really sure what the DSCC is doing. Do they know some detail that would doom Marshall's chances if it came out? Is she a Vito Fossella or something?

If this convinces her to raise a couple million for the primary, she'll win it and be in better shape for the general. And recently, NC has been quite friendly to female politicians. She might drive women to join CA, WA and ME. But right now, I'll put Burr's reelect probability at 55%.

Marshall is going to beat Cunningham and Lewis in the primary with ease. Then, Burr will beat her by 5-10 points.
