Bennett is in trouble for all of the above reasons from Mr Smith along with one more...Bennett is a huge globalist. He was chairman of the Transatlantic Policy Network which is benign according to Bennett. I asked his staff about his activity and they lied and said he was not part of it. Trade agreements were the start of the European Union and I see this TPN as the starting point to end our sovereignty.

The only reason Mattheson survives is because of the weird way the Utah districts are gerimandered. The party thought by breaking up Salt Lake with it's liberal downtown and university area they could make three democrat unfriendly districts. The actual result was to create a much more moderate district which has been held mostly by moderate dems. He also has the name recognition of his father who was one of the more popular Governors. I was a worker on Bennett's first campaign. I will NOT vote for him this time, no matter who his opponent is. I have four reasons: Immigration, Health Care, Cass Sunstein, and a general weasel factor. Getting a straight answer from his office on his any subject is impossible. He has the Washington disease of knowing better than his constituents what is good for them. Run Jason PLEASE!

But if you are listing candidates running, Cherilyn Eagar had more staw poll votes than Bennett and has done better than Bennett is other polls.

utah_1,

When we are talking about a 40-person caucus that has lost most of its moderates in 2006 and 2008, and with only a few members who represent blue states, that study becomes far less meaningful.

There are currently 3 FEC filed GOP candidates currently running/challenging Senator Bob Bennett, and you didn't mention one of them?

Eagar has the best chance of winning, including Bennett.

In March of this year Senator Bob Bennett was rated one of the ten most liberal Republicans in the Senate by Human Events based on the American Conservative Union Ratings for 2008. Why Bennett would pay money to convince voters he is Conservative is beyond me?

A couple of minor nit-pics.

1) Jason Chaffetz defeated CHRIS Cannon last year in the primary - not Joe Cannon.
2) Mark Shurtleff did indeed withdraw from the race due to his daughters illness, not because Tea Partiers withdrew their support.
3) Last I heard (I live in Utah and just barely in Chaffetz district) Jim Matheson has decided that he will NOT run for Bennett's Senate seat. That is, of course, subject to change - if the DSCC puts enough pressure on Matheson anything is possible.
4) Jon Huntsman, while a serious fiscal hawk, lost a lot of movement conservatives on social issues - to call him "very conservative" is not accurate due to his stands on social issues.
5) there is one more challenger - GOP Activist Cheryl Lynn Eagar. Mrs. Eagar is probably the MOST conservative candidate of the group. While she did not have the statewide name recognition that Shurtleff or Lampropolous and Lee have, she is mimicking the tactics of the Chaffetz campaign - making herself known to the delegates who ultimately have her fate in their hands. State wide name recognition is great if you are in an open primary but the first battle is the convention and if Mrs Eagar wins the delegates.....

Jaxx - maybe that is why Huntsmen left - he could see the writing on the wall. He maybe very conservative but sounds moderate and that would probably be enough to be targetted.

Taniel I thought that the Attorney General dropped out because of his daughter's mental illiniss, altho the political reasons u give could also have contributed.

Any Democrat would be at a disadvantage against even the most extremist right winger: Utah is both one of the most conservative and one of the most Republican states in the Union (was Bush's best state in 2004 and I think McCain's 3rd best with Idaho and Oklahoma being 2nd and 1st).

Matheeson and Coroon (I think Mathesson would be stronger because he represents alot of consevertive rural areas) would at best make the race lean GOP, and only if Lampropoulos or Lee was the GOP candidate. Depending on the national enviroment it could only get worse for the Democrat. Bennett or Chaffetz would win easily (probably Chaffetz by a much bigger margin because of the excitment he would bring to the tea party activists in the state). A no name Democrat won't even come close unless the Republican has some type of corruption probe, similar to Jefferson in LA-02.

In all, Utah is a safe place for movement conservatives to show thier mettle without endagering the general election, and the ousting of Bob Bennet would send a very strong signal to establishment types. A shame that Huntsman, a very conservative yet more pragmatic kind of guy is now in China instead of govenor of the state.

Utah is the place of idiotic primaries. While I think Chaffetz has been a good Congressman, so was Chris Cannon, and I didn't like the way he beat him.

Either way, I don't care too much because they won't lose the general, but I prefer Bennett.
