I haven't seen the video but the news cycle is back to the economy in light of the world stock market plunges, then the debate tomorrow etc. McCain is running out of time to get the election away from issues. People are voting now - Ohio has completed its 6 days of same day registration and voting, Georgia is finishing up also. All this happening when Obama is 7-10% up.

On another point. Palin would not have been chosen if Hillary (or Selibus) was on the ticket. She was cynically chosen to "exploit" an all male Democratic ticket.

The Keating video put out by the Obama campaign is a bombshell!! It's going to rock the campaign and possibly destroy any chance McCain has left. My only fear is that it is going to somehow come back on Obama and hurt him. Not sure how, but never underestimate what a desperate candidate like McCain may try to pull in the remaining week or two. Also, yes, one can say Obama is not personally responsible for this video, but as I understand it, it was put out by his campaign, so he has implicitly sanctioned it, and more than likely viewed it in advance of its release.

I've thought about the women surrogates, and HRC first and foremost. She hasn't done any of this. I don't know if that's campaign strategy or her reluctance to do so.

op: On the other hand, it is incomprehensible that Republicans are doing such a sloppy job at unveiling their Ayers attack....Why give Democrats such a long time to prepare their counter-strategy?

I don't think the Obama campaign needed any time to prepare their counter-strategy. They must have known these "issues" could be brought up at any time; after all, they were a prominent part of the primary process. I'd be willing to bet that they were prepared all along to respond to these accusations again if they came up in the general election. Indeed, they would have been fools not to anticipate it, and if it's one thing we know about the Obama campaign, it's that it's not run by fools.

I'd guess that Obama's responses have been in the hopper for months, ready to go if the time came.

I think, Zoot, it would have been much more easier had the nominee of the Dems been a female so that there is little reason to accuse her of sexism if she attacked Palin, and that would have been a disaster for Palin. If women must be handled gingerly by male politicians because of perceived sexism, then our best solution is to have the most formidable politician like Hillary competing freely and aggressively agaisnt both a male or a female politician. Or, I wonder, what about Obama only using female surrogates?

I don't think it's true at all that nobody can go after Palin. Hillary Clinton has been taking vicious fire from the right for over a decade (right up to the point where it became clear that Obama was going to beat her during the nomination cycle). Even during the primaries, Obama attacked her on the issues and substance. And there's plenty of fertile ground to go after Palin if they chose.

The problem is, by explicitly attacking her, Obama would be legitimizing her. Right now, the vast majority of the American people don't take her seriously. Attacks delivered from her mouth are almost instantaneously delegitimized, and John McCain knows this. Their hope is, because the press is following everything she says so closely just waiting for the next "Katie Couric Moment", they'll report her attacks, and that'll start a dialog within the media where they don't treat the attacks on merit, but just ask over and over what effect they might have on the Obama campaign. They're trying to turn Sarah Palin into a one man Swiftboat operation.

Any overt attacks by Obama on Palin while in this media dynamic will just cause journalists to breathlessly declare, "OMG, it's working. Sarah Palin is taking Obama out of his game!!1!"

So they're better off ignoring the source of the attacks, and focus on the attack itself, and what this means coming from John McCain. You question does he condone these attacks. If not, is he even still in charge of his own campaign? If he does condone him, so much for the honorable person who once claimed to want to run a clean campaign. Forget Palin, she's just a front that McCain is choosing to hide behind. She's got her own problems that are coming for her, and she knows it. This is all about John McCain regardless of how much he might wish it were otherwise.

Zoot - you are right about gender being the third rail. Palin can make vicious, inaccurate attacks but nobody can say anything bad about her. I thought the GOP didn`t believe in political correctness.

Anon 10:55 - you're correct, and I may have not been entirely clear. Obama has to stand back , but the campaign and his surrogates can go after McCain hammer and tongs.

Personally, I would like to decapitate Palin, but more temperate political judgment is to leave her alone, prowling the landscape and baying at the moon. Her behavior is revolting, but gender has become third rail, and unfortunately there are people out there who believe that a woman is entitled to 'take off the gloves' but can't be attacked in response.

No not right wing version of Austria, but the theocracy of Iran - if they manage to somehow weasel their way to majority status in Congress. Palin is very disgusting in my estimation. I just cannot stand this woman, and every time I hear her attack Obama without substance, I want to vomit. I am an independent and when McCain chose her, I initially thought he may benefit from promoting women's issues. But that is not the case.
Palin is the mindless fox, and McCain is the howling and angry wolf. These people have no sense of honor and integrity. They have become the laughingstock of the world and a real cause of anti-Americanism. How long will it take for the GOP to destroy America's image to the point China overtakes us as the world's only superpower? With their war-mongering, right-wing "either you are with us or you are an enemy" stance, the GOP brand may only remain as the base of American neo-Nazism.

With the Dow falling over 450 points and being below 10000 (first time in over 4 years) this will keep the economy alive as the main issue and minimise the trivia McCain/Palin is trying to spread.
