The speech was the one he needed to give last night. He could have given a speech like he gave in 2006 but last night required a harder edge with more contrast to McCain. Wait for the inaugural address.
No talk this AM about the Greek temple setting after mocking it all day yesterday.
It was interesting that he refered to McCain's temperment.
My favorite line "We all put our country first."

I agree this wasn't his best speech. In my opinion his keynote address in 2004 is the best speech he has ever given. However it was still an excellent speech, and one that he needed to give in the context of McCain's attacks on his "celebrity status" and unwillingless to lead. It is going to be a tough act for the GOP to follow, as while the GOP is more united going into their convention than Democrats were going into theres, and while I think the GOP convention will have a much more coherent message than the Democratic convention, the lack of enthusiam is massive problem. The very first issue that Republicans have in their convention is to find a way to say goodbye to Bush and Cheney without insulting them, something that will be difficult considering that Bush is still very popular with the GOP base, while not as much among the rest the country. The overarching issue the GOP must deal with however is the enthusasim gap. In terms of voting, the GOP has united around John McCain, much better than how the Democrats uniting around Obama. But will these GOP footsoldiers do more than just vote? McCain needs more than just votes, he needs volunteers and alot of of them (he can't get any more money thanks to him accepting the public funding). That is probably McCain's biggest challange.

Bingo! Tonight, Obama became the presidential nominee, and though lacking in his usual rhetorical flair, he carried off the speech with style and grace. The GOP must be trembling, and rightfully so.
