Here are the <a href="http://rosenthalswelt.blogspot.com/2008/07/current-lean-gop-battleground-lean-dem.html" rel="nofollow">current battleground and LEAN GOP/LEAN DEM statistics</a>, due to change somewhat again before I put out my traditional 2 month poll convergence.

There are more battlegrounds than we think, and they are practically all moving in Obama's direction.

Take a look.

Obama's (actually Howard Dean's) 50 state plan is overwhelming McCain. While JM tries to focus on the old swing states of OH and PA, Obama is chipping away CO, ND, AK, VA and NC - all solid red states. BO is enforcing this strategy with today's $5 mil Olympics national media buy. Getting a weeks worth of media from his trip abroad - all free - is priceless. All Obama, all the time, is killing McCain. The Olympics start about a week after BO's return. After the Olympics, there is only 10 weeks left before the election - very little time for McCain to stick his finger in every hole in the dike.

Wouldn't Iowa plus Kerry states plus Virginia be 272 electoral votes, not 271?

Very good news for Obama. He has forced McCain to spend time and money in Virginia. A definite shift onto GOP territory. Florida being so close is also good news for Obama because a) he doesn't need the state and b) he hardly campaigned or spent money there since no valid Dem primary was held. So he has room to grow there (registering of voters etc).
Minnesota being safe is just the icing on the cake. Kerry had to worry about six weekly held states (OR, WA, MI, PA, MN and WI). Looks like Obama needs only spend time and money in MI and maybe WI. A definite improvement, allowing him to spend time and money in GOP states like CO, NM, NV, VA, NC, OH, FL.
