Zel took a hard steer to the right after almost losing the governor’s mansion in 1994.

Then perhaps I'm not aware of the Zel Miller that you're referring to, since I didn't really know anything about him until after 2000. I know only of the post-rightward Miller: the one that parroted Bush's purposely deceptive statistics touting the benefits of the proposed dividend tax cuts, and who looked so angry I thought he might explode at the 2004 Republican Convention. I'd think Nunn would have more integrity in both situations, regardless of whether he'd be a good VP choice or not.

I strongly believe that Nunn's political positions are very closely aligned with Zel Miller. As recent as the early 1990's, Zel was considered to be more liberal than Nunn. Zel took a hard steer to the right after almost losing the governor's mansion in 1994.

Nunn would be more aligned with George Bush than Kerry, too, in 2004 if he was in the political spotlight. I believe any support Nunn gives Obama is also an indicator on how much he dislikes the Clintons.

It's completely fair to argue that Nunn would cost the ticket elsewhere more than he would add in the South. But a clone of Zel Miller? Nunn at least is reasonable; he would never have delivered the red-faced tirade that Miller did at the 2004 Republican Convention.

It's one thing to push the envelope in GA, its another thing to let that become the centerpiece for your strategic thinking.

I agree with Jim W - Nunn may corner McCain in GA, but it will raise havoc elsewhere, esp. in the Daily Koz precincts that are already up in arms over FISA, etc. I don't think Obama wants to abandon his original base totally and get into a dog-fight with McCain over the center without continued support from that base. He can get to the same place (except in GA) by going with Webb, who brings a tinge of economic populism that will keep the base happy and still adds credibility on security and defense. Nunn can be saved for a Cabinet seat if Obama wins.

I believe that Sam Nunn would also be a bad choice of VP. Sam would help Obama in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Floriday, but would hurt him in PA, OH, IA, MI, WI, and MO. I think that Sam Nunn and Zel Miller are two clones from the same cloth.
